- Leh
(Day 81)
Today unfortunately was
just a day of geek frustration. The morning was spent trying to search
out a place where I could copy the photos of the Road to Leh trip onto
a CD-ROM for Paul and Jo who will be going on they way tomorrow. This
turns out to be a heck of a task as there aren't many places in town which
have CD recorders, and even less that actually have CD-R's for sale. I
do find one shop but he's asking US$ 3.00 for each CD burned which is
really highway robbery. Since I also want to do a backup of all the photos
so far in case I go into another river, this would be a bit of change.
I decide to burn one, but then find that all of his systems are Windows98
which won't read the portable hard-disks I've brought without drivers
I'll need to have sent from Taiwan ...lovely.
To make things more interesting, my web host in the US has decided to
go bankrupt and they have turned off my servers, shutting down all three
of my websites and mail etc. Now I spend a ridiculous amount of time trying
to sort that out through e-mail on what is really outrageously priced
Cyber-Cafe time of US$ 3.00 / hr. Spending several hours doing this, I
have ended up spending more on cyber-cafe's then my hotel three times
already in Leh.
I did finally solve the CD problem and burned a nice CD for Paul and Jo
which I'm sure will bring a lot to this trip that they wouldn't otherwise
have had. The good part is that as I was taking all the pictures, I got
many of them together which they said they didn't have, the bad part is
I'm still without many pictures of myself! It continues to be hard to
prove I was even here! ?:-)
The website is still down however and at the moment a bit of an unsolvable
problem. It will be prohibitively expensive to re-upload this site which
is already 28megs of space from a cafe in Leh to another provider but
I don't know if the current bozos will turn the servers on again and release
my files... until then, I'm writing this journal for no particular reason
as who knows when and if the darn thing will be posted again! Agh the
fun of being reliant on geek-toys on a trip. Sometimes I think its too
much of a pain, but then after looking at the CD of pictures I made for
Paul and Jo, I know it will all be worth it to keep the memories of this
experience.
