- Kausani - Amora
(Day 135)
I ride into Amora, which
is a long town spread along the mountain like half a bracelet. It was
another town I wanted to stop at for no other reason than Bob Segar sang
about it and I remember it sounding like a far exotic place when I was
young. The reality though was not nearly as interesting as what it sounded
like. Amora probably was a nice little hill-town 20 years ago but now
its an ugly sprawl of concrete which takes too much away from the beauty
of the area. Centered around one main road there is a constant blare of
horns that one is never very far from. I went through the entire town
looking for some nice quiet hotel and when I didn't find one, went with
Lonely Planet's suggestion of Hotel Shikar was supposed to be the best.
One walks into the hotel and its very clear they think they are the best
but I found their semi-deluxe room rather tired and dingy. After listening
to hammers pound in some construction that was going on right next to
the room, I went and demanded a change, which they granted moving me into
their "super-deluxe" room, which was just about as bad. Being closer to
the road the horns could be heard all night, the sheets would not stay
on the bed and there was no hot water...not much pleasant about today
to report unfortunately.
