2003-09-23 / 09-24 - Pokhara (Day 161-162)

It is another rainy day with the mountains just peeking a couple of times through the clouds that surround the foothills. I have spent the day in the cafe with my books so there is little to report of interest except what was on TV, which is a little different. Here I am an American who has chosen to live the last 15 years away from the United States in Taiwan and now I am in Nepal after spending most of this year in India when I turn on the TV and find "Wild Taiwan" is the show on National Geographic.

My immediate thought is "Home!" but then I realize the silliness of that thought, while it may be an adopted home, this trip was a breaking point in my leaving Taiwan most likely to make the long delayed move to China, probably Shanghai and now I'm looking back. Then the thought of my American roots comes back and it is funny that the USA has so little feeling of "home" to me and there is so little that ties me to my birthplace other than my passport.

The reality is that there isn't a place that I can feel is a home and I'm just drifting between islands on a very big sea, resting my hat here and there for a matter of years. I wonder if that is a facet of a changing world that has made international travel and even trips like this relatively commonplace and will continue to span more "citizen's of the world" who are ever less tied to any particular place.
